Nico Laan was born in Nibbixwoud, Netherlands, in 1956. Studied Textile/Monumental at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Works as a designer and photographer.
He is well known for his works created in sand, that have as a unique feature, the game with perspective. His method consists of perfect harmony between nature and anamorphosis. To transform his imagination into reality, uses what nature has to offer. Through processes such as distortion and increased complexity, generates its own optical illusion. The piece comes to life when viewed from a certain angle, for example, the view of a bird. Laan works not only with sandy environments but with any type of environment, such as Iceland, the mudflats or a rapeseed field. The fact that his works won’t live for long because nature will eventually make them disappear, just makes them even more special.
